John Gilluly

John Gilluly’s love for craftsmanship began at age five in his family’s cellar, building wood and metal projects with his father and uncle. In high school, he discovered ceramics and became fascinated by the spinning process—a theme that would later return in his woodturning.

With a degree in Material Science and Metallurgy and a minor in Electrical Engineering from Lehigh University, John brings a technical foundation to his art. He further developed his pottery skills through studies at Michigan State University and two other colleges.

Over the past 55 years, John has focused on woodworking. A turning point came when he inherited a 1950s Rockwell lathe—blending his love of wood and motion. After years of practice and an equipment upgrade to a Powermatic 3520B, he found his true passion in lathe work.

John creates bowls, boxes, and platters that honor the natural beauty of each material. His work is shaped by a philosophy of craftsmanship in harmony with nature. Since 2017, he’s also shared his knowledge through teaching. In 2024, he launched Site 19 Studios to inspire and connect with fellow woodworkers and art lovers.
